Acceptance testing of a new hydroturbine scale model for Sayano-Shushenskaya Hydropower Plant was completed at Leningradsky Metallichesky Zavod (LMZ), which is a subsidiary of Power Machines OJSC.
Representatives of RusHydro JSC headed by Dmitry Kaplaty (Deputy Chief of Repair, Modernization and Reconstruction Planning Department) took part in the testing of a 1:15 scale hydroturbine model. A representative of I.I. Polzunov Power Engineering Research and Design Institute (NPO CKTI) attended the tests as an expert.
The set of conducted model tests confirmed high quality and improved operational safety of the new hydroturbine. The representatives of RusHydro JSC appreciated a high level of the test management, as well as full compliance of all the results obtained with the declared parameters. In particular, basing on calculations performed as per the scale effect method, the test results showed that the maximum firm power of the Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP hydro turbines had been generated even with some margin and in compliance with the technical specification.
During the last stage of testing the model unit was partially disassembled and the wheel space dimensions were checked, which showed full compliance of the model with the geometric parameters of full-scale turbine.
In November 2009 Power Machines and RusHydro JSC concluded a contract for manufacturing main power generating equipment for the reconstruction of Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP. Power Machines is to manufacture 10 turbines and nine hydro generators each having a capacity of 640 MW as well as six excitation systems upon this contract. In addition, Power Machines specialists are to provide installation supervision services and carry out commissioning works. The contract amount is 11.7 billion roubles (exclusive of VAT).
Power Machines has now developed and handed over the part of the technical design to be approved by the customer. The service life of new hydroelectric sets has been increased to 40 years and their output efficiency is to be 96.6 %. The turbines will be equipped with a more efficient protection system, providing for automatic trip in case of exceeding limit conditions.
