Power Machines has manufactured the second hydrogenerator for Sao Joao HPP under construction in Brazil.
Its capacity amounts to 39.69 MW for a frequency of 60 Hz. Similar machines were manufactured by Power Machines' branch, Electrosila, for Svetogorskaya and Lesogorskaya HPPs in Leningrad Oblast, Russia, as well as for Los Caracoles HPP in Argentina. These machines are economical and reliable.
Eletrosul SA, Brazil's national energy company, acts as the end user of the equipment. A relevant contract was signed by Power Machines in 2008. Its price is over 7 million euro. Under the contract, the Russian company will supply two hydrogenerators. The hydrogenerators are planned to be started up in the first half of 2010.
Further contracts are expected to be signed between Power Machines and Eletrosul SA for manufacturing installation aids and spare parts and for supervising equipment installation at Sao Joao HPP.
Sao Joao HPP is located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul on the Ijui River (a tributary of the Rio Uruguay). Its dam height is 21 m, reservoir area 20.6 sq.km. The power equipment from Power Machines which is in service in Brazil has a total capacity of more than 1,700 MW. Back in the 1970s the company's branches, Leningradsky Metallichesky Zavod and Electrosila, supplied equipment to Capivara and Sobradinho HPPs. The return to the Brazilian energy market took place in 2002 – 2004 with the delivery of equipment to Porto Goes HPP.
