On December 10, 2015 at 9:21 p.m. local time (7:21 p.m. MSK), a turbogenerator of power unit 4 at Beloyarskaya NPP was synchronized with the grid, and the power unit released current into the unified electric power network for the first time. Grid synchronization was carried out under the program for power start-up of the new innovative power unit of Beloyarskaya NPP with a fast neutron reactor.
The subsequent stage, i.e. pilot industrial operation, will involve adjusting power unit’s systems, conducting necessary tests of the equipment and reaching power unit’s maximum capacity of 885 MW.
The contract for supplying a set of basic equipment for the turbine hall at Beloyarskaya NPP’ power unit with a БН-800 reactor, which is currently under construction, was signed by Power Machines OJSС and ZIOMAR Engineering Company OJSC in 2007. Under this contract, Power Machines OJSС manufactured and delivered a new 885 MW steam turbine and auxiliary equipment, as well as an 890 MW turbogenerator. Power Machines OJSС was also in charge of supervised installation of the equipment and start-up management.
Beloyarskaya NPP’s power unit No. 4 with a fast neutron reactor is an innovative project of the Russian nuclear industry. Power unit No. 3, with a БН-600 reactor plant, which is currently in operation at Beloyarskaya NPP, has served as a prototype for the new unit and is the world’s largest fast neutron reactor power unit capable of electric energy production and nuclear-fuel conversation.
Currently, three Power Machines’ turbines with the capacity of 210 MW each are operated within power unit No. 3 of Beloyarskaya NPP. Power unit No. 4 has a single-block design, which assumes the use of a single, more powerful turbine combined with a new hydrogen-free turbogenerator featuring enhanced performance and thermal efficiency, as well as significantly improved reliability.
