On August 26, Power Machines and FESCO transportation group finished loading two hydro turbine wheels each 8.5 m in diameter and weighing 244 tons onto a vessel to be transported to the EuroSibEnergo Krasnoyarsk HPP.
On August 26, 2017 a unique operation involving shipment of Russia's most massive centrifugal turbine wheels from Leningradsky Metallichesky Zavod was finished on the Sverdlovskaya Embankment in Saint Petersburg. Two turbine wheels intended for the EuroSibEnergo Krasnoyarsk HPP weighing 488 tons in total were removed from the plant in order to be shipped by water to Russia's second most powerful hydraulic power plant located on the Yenisei.
"Manufacturing this equipment was a great challenge for our company. When the Krasnoyarsk HPP was built, wholly welded turbine wheels were used there for the first time in the world, and the primary equipment of the Krasnoyarsk HPP exceeded the world standard. Therefore, decades after the plant was started, we had to design and manufacture turbine wheels meeting new modern standards. This became possible thanks to the company's high design, engineering and production potential," stated Yuri Petrenya, PJSC Power Machines general director. "As a result of the modernization, the Krasnoyarsk HPP will operate new turbine wheels with improved output and cavitation parameters meeting modern efficiency standards."
"Replacement of the turbine wheels is a new important stage of comprehensive refurbishment of the Krasnoyarsk HPP that will improve the plant’s operational reliability, allow usto use the hydroenergetic resources of the Yenisei more effectively, and to produce more clean energy," stated Vyacheslav Solomin, EuroSibEnergo JSC general director.
The cargo is expected to be delivered to the Krasnoyarsk HPP in late September - early October. It will take about five months to install the new turbine wheels; after that, in March-April 2018 the modernized hydraulic units will be put into operation.
Hydraulic turbines with new wheels whose performance characteristics were confirmed in the process of model tests are better than the turbines installed at the HPP at present by their parameters because their water wheels are designed using an innovative blade system allowing to ensure effectiveness and dynamic stability of the modernized turbines.
The replacement of the Krasnoyarsk HPP turbine wheels is a part of New Energy comprehensive program of EuroSibEnergo Siberian hydraulic power plants modernization. At present, new turbine wheels and other equipment is also being installed at the Bratsk and Ust-Ilimsk HPP; this August, a tender was announced for the design and delivery of new turbines for the company's Irkutsk HPP.
Through implementation of the first stage of the New Energy program, the EuroSibEnergo Siberian hydraulic power plants: the Krasnoyarsk, Bratsk and the Ust-Ilimsk Plants will increase production of environmentally friendly electric energy by 1.5 bn kWh annually while running on the same volume of water. Thanks to this, the energy supplied by hydraulic power plants will be able to partially substitute the energy supplied by coal-fired power plants. This will allow saving up to 800 thous. tons of coal annually and reduce coal-fired power plants' greenhouse gas emissions by 2 mln. tons annually, affecting the environmental situation in the Siberian regions favorably.
